Our Philosophy On What Being A Competent and Effective Mentor Means

A good mentor can be a valuable resource. The importance of mentoring relationships becomes evident as we recognize the value of networking and maintaining relationships throughout our careers. The value of a good mentor is immeasurable when it comes to learning the tricks of the trade as well as becoming connected to those in the know .

A mentor can help to alleviate much of the frustration individuals often feel in their first few months. By sharing their insight and knowledge many individuals can be spared a great deal of stress which is often felt by "newbies" when acclimating to a new environment. A good mentor can advise and support. A competent mentor will help avoid an unnecessary "resignation" due to feelings of incompetence and isolation.

While there are many things a Good Mentor needs to do provide, there are things which a Competent mentor should not provide as well . Mentors are not teachers, a source of finance, a substitute parent, social worker or counselor. Mentors should assist and provide the essential tools to enable individuals in meeting their goals. However as a competent mentor, you should not do the work for your mentee.

A true mentor will always recognize their limits and be quit aware of their impact on the individual they are assisting. As a mentor it is your responsibility to never agree to assist someone you truly don't have the time to work with. Your lack of commitment or lack of ability to commit will shine through and the mentee will be left frustrated and discouraged.

As a mentor, you should feel a great deal of excitement and jubilation when your mentee is ready to
" leave the nest." That's a sign of a job well done.
